"It's a shame that the people who are listening to you the most are only interested in you because they want you and your peers to buy their product."

I think that this statement is sadly true. I don’t believe that the only people who listen to others the most are those who are selling the product because that does not account for close friends and family. Corporations who are looking for their target do certainly listen more actively than any other people in the business world because without customers they cannot exist or be successful. It is true that they are only interested in what you want because they don’t care about your personal life or the type of person you are. They just want to know: will you buy my product? And if the answer is no, then why not? It is a shame, but with the fast moving business world in America’s desperate economy they have no choice.

NO ONE...NO ONE...Part II

No One is one of Alicia Key's most recent songs from her new album As I Am, but it became a popular single in 2007. She has perfomed this song at the VMA's, the Grammy's and at the New Year's Count Down/Ball drop in New York City. This song is also on the radio on popular stations constantly, which is how I was first exposed to this song. I like this song so much because of the rhythm, the beat, the blend of R&B and pop and of course Alicia Key's strong personality shines through. This song is also a nice, modern spin on old love songs. Looking over the lyrics and constantly singing along with them, it is clear that she is singing about someone she is deeply in love with and feels very strongly about. In the chorus, Keys sings "You and me together through the days and nights, I don't worry 'cause everything's going to be alright." She explains that she will never separate from the love of her life because nothing can come between them. No mattter what happens they everything will be fine because they will have eachother. I really like this spin because like all of the love songs before her time, it gives hope to those who have love or are looking for love without regard to age, sexuality, race or ethnicity. Alicia Keys' lyrics truly speak to the greater population.

No One...No One...Can Compare To Alicia Keys

Looking more closely at Alicia Keys' music, background and influences I have learned a great deal. I am really glad I chose her because she truly has a rich history of struggle and succession. Growing up in Harlem, New York with fighting parents who ended up divorcing, she was placed into a complicated situation. From the young age of seven thoughm, she found hope for her life on the piano. She was already learning Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, which I think is very impressive. She was a star from the beginning, but not only in her musical abilities was she noticed. She was also an excellent student. She was the valedvictorian of her highschool at the age of sixteen. She was accepted to NYU, but made the tough decision to follow her dreams and pursue a music career. I think that her music career idea was a very good one because now she is one of the top artists in America.

While watching the documentary, I realized that I have only seen pictures of Elvis and I have never actually seen footage of his world renowned dancing. Watching him perform on stage with thousands of girls go crazy for his risque movements, wild persona and dangerously good looks was fascinating. The girls of the fifties were head over heels for Elvis because he was like nothing they had seen before and had the disapproval of their parents, making him ever more attractive. He introduced sex appeal on stage. Sex was certainly not something that was discussed in the fifties because it was considered a private manner, but he projected it in his lyrics and appearance. Elvis was essentially sex on stage. He was the beginning of what was to come in the sixties, seventies and eventually progressing to the outrageousness that is the new millennium. Because of his wild character, he not only allotted for young girls' strong sexual attraction to a famous figure, but also was responsible for a new emotional connection the teenagers attained through his music to a distant figure. Elvis was the newest and most exciting thing since Frank Sinatra. 

I'LL TELL YOU WHAT I WANT...

My first favorite band was definitely the Spice Girls. They were pretty. They were crazy. And for a seven-year old girl, the lyrics were very easy to memorize. Of course, everyone identified themselves with an individual Spice Girl and by my peers I was considered a good "sporty spice." Not that I did any sports whatsoever, it was more something you could just tell. Making up dances with my friends to their music was fun. The Spice Girls meant a lot to me as a first grader because they were role-models outside of my tiny bubble. Their music, while maybe not an accurate preview of the music I listen to now, was a good introduction to music outside of the Baby Beluga and Annie Get Your Gun tapes.
